Heya.Unfortunately...when Kaboodle is used to connect two
networks together, you can't yet "map a drive" across the connection.
That's a feature I plan on adding soon, but it's not there yet. Once
we do, you'll be able to perform automated remote backups.

And it's an interesting idea: designating another LAN to be
"auto-connected". Right now, every VPN connection must be done
"manually", even for re-connection. It would be useful if those
connections could be full automatic though. Thanks for the
suggestion!

I thank you very much for your reply. The reason I want to permanently connect the two LANs together is to perform automated remote backups. As you stated, if the IP address changes, the Kaboodle personal VPN connection would break. This would cause the backups to fail. Would Kaboodle automatically re-establish a VPN connection if the backup application attempts to connect to a computer on another LAN or does the connection need to be manually made before the application is used?

Thanks again,

Frank

Heya. My understanding of dynamically assigned IP addresses
is that your ISP's could "change your IP address" (ie, let another one
of their customers use the IP address you were most recently assigned)
if it perceives that you weren't doing anything with your Internet
connection. That is, if you have a long-term, established connection,
it is very unlikely the ISP would change your IP address on you in the
middle of it, causing the connection to "break". As soon as your Internet
use becomes idle, though, it could happen. ISP's do this so that they
can have a total number of customers larger than the number of IP
addresses they own (lease, really), which makes broadband Internet
more affordable than it otherwise would be.

Fortunately...there's not many reasons I can think of that would
require two LANs to be *permanently* connected to each other. And
if the IP address changes due to a re-assignment during a period of
inactivity, it's pretty easy with Kaboodle (via KaboodleProxy) to
reestablish a connection whenever it's needed, regardless of what
the current IP address is.

        I hope this helps!

cheers,
Scott

Hello,

Kaboodle seem to be a very cool tool and I am going to attempt and play with it. I have two Windows based LANs that I would like to connect together permanently. However, they connect to the Internet using DSL and cable modems and the IP address assigned to the routers are dynamic and might change without notice. Will Kaboodle keep the two LANs connected even though the IP addresses might change?

I would appreciate any advise you might have.

Thank you,
