I am using kaffe-1.0.5.tar.gz.

Neither exist. (I renamed /usr/local/lib/kaffe away and /usr/local/kaffe
never existed.)
In any event, having to do all this renaming makes an upgrade of a production
machine impossible, so this is a serious problem.
