ಕುಮಾರವ್ಯಾಸ ಭಾರತ ದ್ರೋಣನ ಜನನ ಹೇಗಾಯಿತು? ಮುನಿ ಭರದ್ವಾಜಾಖ್ಯನಿರ್ದನು ಘನ ತಪೋನಿಷ್ಠೆಯಲಿ ದಿವಿಜಾಂ ಗನೆಯ ಕಂಡನು ಗಾಯವಡೆದನು ಮದನನೆಸುಗೆಯಲಿ ತನು ಪರಿಚ್ಯುತ ವೀರ್ಯವನು ಸ ತ್ಕನಕ ಕಲಶದೊಳಿರಿಸಲಲ್ಲಿಯೆ ಜನಿಸಿದನು ದ್ರೋಣಾಭಿದಾನನು ಮುನಿಯ ದೆಸೆಯಿಂದ (ಆದಿ ಪರ್ವ, ೬ ಸಂಧಿ, ೨೧ ಪದ್ಯ) ತಾತ್ಪರ್ಯ: ಭೀಷ್ಮ ಪಾಂಡವರು ಮತ್ತು ಕೌರವರಿಗೆ ಶಸ್ತ್ರಾಸ್ತ್ರ ಅಭ್ಯಾಸಕ್ಕಾಗಿ ಗುರುಗಳನ್ನು ಹುಡುಕುತ್ತಿದ್ದನು. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ದ್ರೋಣನ ಪರಿಚಯ ಕುಮಾರವ್ಯಾಸ ಮಾಡುತ್ತಾನೆ. ಹಿಂದೆ ಭಾರದ್ವಾಜ ಮುನಿಗಳು ತಪೋನಿಷ್ಠರಾಗಿದ್ದಾಗ ಒಬ್ಬ ಅಪ್ಸರ ಸ್ತ್ರೀಯನ್ನು (ಘೃತಾಚಿ) ಕಂಡು ಕಾಮಜ್ವರಿತರಾದರು. ಈ ಮದನನ ಬಾಣದ ಆಕ್ರಮಣದಿಂದ ಗಾಯಗೊಂಡ ಮುನಿಯು ಆ ಸಮಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಸ್ಖಲಿಸಿದ ಅವರ ವೀರ್ಯವನ್ನು ಒಂದು ಚಿನ್ನದ ಕಲಶದಲ್ಲಿಟ್ಟರು. ಈ ಕಲಶದಿಂದ ಮುಂದೆ ಒಂದು ಗಂಡು ಮಗುವು ಜನಿಸಿತು, ಆ ಮಗುವಿಗೆ ದ್ರೋಣ ನೆಂಬ ಹೆಸರನ್ನಿಟ್ಟರು. ಅರ್ಥ: ಮುನಿ: ಋಷಿ; ಆಖ್ಯಾತ: ಪ್ರಸಿದ್ಧನಾದ ವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಘನ: ಗಟ್ಟಿಯಾದುದು, ಶ್ರೇಷ್ಠವಾದುದು, ಬಲ, ಶಕ್ತಿ ತಪೋ: ತಪಸ್ಸು; ನಿಷ್ಠೆ: ಶ್ರದ್ಧೆ; ದಿವಿಜ: ದೇವತೆಗಳು ಆಂಗನೆ: ಹೆಂಗಸು, ಸ್ತ್ರೀ; ಕಂಡು: ನೋಡಿ ಗಾಯ: ಪೆಟ್ಟು; ಮದನ: ಕಾಮ; ರತೀಶ ಎಸುಗೆ: ಬಾಣ ಪ್ರಯೋಗ ಮಾಡು ತನು: ದೇಹ; ಪರಿಚ್ಯುತ: ಕೆಳಗೆ ಬಿದ್ದ, ಚೆಲ್ಲಿದ, ಸುರಿದ ವೀರ್ಯ: ತೇಜಸ್ಸು; ಕನಕ: ಬಂಗಾರ, ಚಿನ್ನ ಕಲಶ: ಬಿಂದಿಗೆ ಕೊಡ; ಜನಿಸು: ಹುಟ್ಟು ಅಭಿದಾನ: ಹೆಸರು; ದೆಸೆ: ಕಾರಣ ಪದವಿಂಗಡನೆ: ಭಾರದ್ವಾಜ+ಅಖ್ಯನ್+ಇರ್ದನು; ಮದನನ್+ಎಸುಗೆಯಲಿ; ಕಲಶದೊಳ್ +ಇರಿಸಲ್+ಅಲ್ಲಿಯೆ; ದ್ರೋಣ+ಅಭಿದಾನನು ಅಚ್ಚರಿ: (೧) ಮೊದಲ ಮತ್ತು ಕೊನೆಯ ಹಿಂದಿನ ಪದ "ಮುನಿ" ಆಗಿರುವುದು (೨) ಕಲಶ ದಿಂದ ಜನಿಸಿದ ದ್ರೋಣ - ಇದು ಇಂದಿನ ವೈಜ್ಞಾನಿಕ ವಾಗಿ ಕರೆಯಲ್ಪಡುವ "ಟೆಸ್ಟ್ ಟ್ಯೂಬ್ ಬೇಬಿ" ಗೆ ಸಮಾನವೇ? (೩) ಆಯುಧ ದಿಂದ ತಿವಿದರೆ ಗಾಯವಾಗುತ್ತದೆ, ಆದರೆ ಮದನನ ಹತ್ತಿರವಿರ್ವುದು ಹೂವಿನ ಬಾಣಗಳು, ಇದರಿಂದ ಹೊಡೆತ ತಿಂದ ಭರದ್ವಾಜ ಮುನಿಗಳಿಗೆ ಗಾಯ ವಾಯಿತು ಎಂದು ಕವಿ ವರ್ಣಿಸಿದ್ದಾನೆ. (೪) ಎಂಥಹ ಸ್ಥಿತ ಪ್ರಜ್ಞರಿಗು ಮೋಹವನ್ನು ಗೆಲ್ಲಲು ಎಷ್ಟು ಕಷ್ಟ ಎಂದು ಈ ಕವನ ತಿಳಿಸುತ್ತದ
