If you only use the mouse, I can understand that it can get difficult.
On the other hand the tree structure is a very convenient if you use the
keyboard.

Actually I find xconfig more confusing. :)
Anyway, currently I'm working on the back end and filling the holes of
the specification. UI issues are somewhat down on my list, so it will
stay rather simple for a while. On the other hand I'll try to implement
a decent interface to the config information, so that people can easily
implement whatever front end they like (one such front end e.g. might be
the extraction of build information).

Unless everyone tells that my work is useless, yes.
Right now I would be most interested in a technical discussion how the
kernel should be configured. We have now two possible implementations
and I'm really surprised that I didn't got any feedback from ESR so far.
