If Linus said that kbuild-devel is (was) a 'closed forum', then Linus was wrong. kbuild-devel was advertised as the contact list for configuration and makefile subsystems in the MAINTAINERS file, along with hundreds of other mailing lists in MAINTAINERS. The list was open to everyone and maintained public archives.
