If you want to boot a PC, this matter of taste: there is a zoo of
shiny-tiny distros to start with, old versions may provide 2.4 kernel as
well. And my estimation of the kernel size is 2-4 MB. It depends mainly
on how many things you will complile in the kernel, rather than what
kernel version is.
