Here is some sugar that will not mess up your clear result-print
line with obscure syntax, by hiding it elsewhere:
use Tie::Function 0.01;
tie my %indent, Tie::Function => sub{"\t"x$_[0]};
...
print "$indent{$level} $rest $of $mydata";
