Looking at perldoc perlvar I'm a little surprised that there isn't already something like $^LAST_SUCCESSFUL_REGEX because Perl does keep that around, for use in m//.
I've just proposed that qr// prise that out of the innards and return it, which is clumsier than a designated special variable.
