kdb and recent Redhat kernels flash the keyboard leds during a panic to tell you that the kernel is dead. If you are sitting in X with no console visible it is often the only indication you get that a kernel has died. To disable this feature, in arch/i386/kdb/kdba_io.c change #define KDB_BLINK_LED 1 to #undef KDB_BLINK_LED
