Thanks.  I tried that out (I had to port it to 2.6.11, though so I may have 
erred) and I was able to hit the breakpoint without an oops.  Continuing from 
that point was not always successful however.   Sometimes, everything goes 
south.

I have sent data from my original problem and that your patch greatly improved 
my situation to Jack Vogel and we will see what he does with it.
