This is exactly my problem with the “new” start menu.

The whole menu feels cluttered an it also makes no sense to delete all entries
from the menu that you don't need every day just to make the menu look tidier.
I would prefer at least an option in the settings to switch back to the old
style. It doesn't have to be the default settings but at least an option to
turn it on.

The Application Menu is an alternative sure, but it still feels sluggish and
when you try to switch categories it will often not display the whole menu (see
bug report 488197)
