You're probably using the quick preview, which uses an embedded preview in the image. Go to the digiKam settings under View -> Preview and select the full image as the preview (automatic). It's also conceivable that the quality scan results in a reduced preview in the cache that is displayed. However, I can't reproduce it here quickly.
