The Scan for New Items at Startup and Detect faces on newly added images only takes a few seconds on startup, and the problem appears several minutes later, so I suspect they are not related. Notice how the "Enable background face recognition scan" is disabled (issue appears regardless). I believe the issue appears when the library reaches a critical point, when digikam periodically retrains its face recognition. For instance, my wife has a pretty large library too, but maybe 1/3 smaller than mine, and on the same computer she doesn't experience this issue (or it's barely noticeable). As of today, I have 208.000 pictures, and 214.000 tagged faces (~160.000 confirmed) in ~1060 different persons.
