If it were merely a resource spike, I'd expect a general slowdown, and/or an OOM event. Instead, it entirely ANRs the shell, and I notice no slowness elsewhere. If you can share your flamegraph (etcetera), I can take this to Firefox, instead (once I've reproduced it on Windows), because a WebExtension shouldn't be able to do this.
