But "the old behaviour" it how calculators have always worked – type a number,
select an operator, get the result:

type 16 → 16
type √ → 4  
type √ → 2

To mimic this behaviour you have to input an extra "="

type 16 →
type = →
type √ → 4  
type √ → 2

It might be nice that you can edit the input, but having to type the √ 
operator first is completely unexpected behaviour.
