It feels more logical for charater-based windows like Emacs and XTerm.  Why
should I give away pixels that cannot used by the application?

More critically, for Emacs obeying geometry restrictions turned out to be a
work-around for a resizing issue in certain builds [1].

(And while searching for [1] I found (KDE-unrelated)  [2] from yet another user
who wants character-wise operations in Emacs.)
