Bug ID: 515729
Summary: Stutter or bad frame timing in some situations with
Plasma 6.6 beta
Classification: Plasma
Product: kwin
Version First 6.5.91
Reported In:
Platform: Kubuntu
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: performance
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
SUMMARY
After upgrading to the Plasma 6.6 beta, I noticed that in some conditions, I'm
getting stutter and/or bad frame timing causing jerkiness. I've noticed this
happen in 2 circumstances. One is if I am using Konsole and holding down a
key, for example to backspace a large block of text. In this case, the cursor
moves jerkily with a different amount of time between each backspace. (The
same thing happens if I just hold down the spacebar or any other key to input a
large number of characters rapidly.) The second situation is animations in
Firefox. For example, if I go to https://lukehaas.me/projects/css-loaders/,
the spinners all animate jerkily with kwin 6.5.91 where they were smooth in
6.5.x.
Notably, however, scrolling in Firefox and other applications is not affected
and remains smooth. This issue also does not seem to affect any game that I
have tried, nor does it affect glxgears/vkcube/etc, window dragging, video
playback in MPV, or anything else I have tried so far.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Start Konsole
2. Hold down the spacebar
OBSERVED RESULT
There is a pronounced stutter in the cursor movement; the cursor remains in
each position for a different amount of time.
EXPECTED RESULT
The cursor should remain in each position for the same amount of time and move
"smoothly" as it did in kwin 6.5.x and before.
