STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. paste some ascii art or code from a code editor
2. use the rich text formatter to enable code formatting
3. code formatting will be enabled and content will be displayed correctly
4. for example, try:

###    ###

OBSERVED RESULT
one backtick instead of three, breaking formatting

EXPECTED RESULT
three backticks, preserving formatting.
