Bug ID: 516022
Summary: Feature Request: Timer start via KRunner search
Classification: Applications
Product: KClock
Version First 25.12.2
Reported In:
Platform: Fedora RPMs
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: wishlist
Priority: NOR
Component: General
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
CC: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
SUMMARY
Using many search engines, including Google and DuckDuckGo, results for
searches such as "3 minute timer" will result in a widget displaying a timer
for the corresponding time. I believe that integrating this functionality into
KRunner by having a result automatically delegate to kclockd would be a useful
feature.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Enter a duration, such as "3 minutes" into the KRunner search bar
2. Select the result "Start a Timer for 3 Minutes" (currently does not exist)
3. KClock creates and starts a new background timer for the corresponding
duration as though it had been created via the existing UI
OBSERVED RESULT
No such result exists. Unit converter appears, but there is no timer suggestion
or result.
EXPECTED RESULT
A new timer is created as described above.
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Windows: N/A
macOS: N/A
(available in the Info Center app, or by running `kinfo` in a terminal window)
Linux/KDE Plasma: Fedora Linux 43
KDE Plasma Version: 6.5.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.22.0
Qt Version: 6.10.1
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
I suspect the most challenging components of implementing this are localization
and time format parsing; there are many valid ways to express a duration,
especially across differing locales. An English-only implementation would be
simple but likely insufficient for KDE's international user base.
