Bug ID: 516180
Summary: Default "WindowMinimize / Squash" animation silently
fails without Task Manager
Classification: Plasma
Product: kwin
Version First unspecified
Reported In:
Platform: Arch Linux
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: minor
Priority: NOR
Component: effects-window-management
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
SUMMARY
The default "Squash" animation for window minimize requires a task manager to
work, and if none exist in panels and desktop it will behave the same as
animation "None", without issuing warnings. This is inconsistent with the
"Magic Lamp" animation, which has a fallback goto position (the mouse), causing
user confusion and degraded visuals.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. On a fresh plasma 6 setup, remove the task manager from the bottom panel.
2. Ensure that animation "WindowMinimize / Squash" is selected (default).
3. Minimize any window.
OBSERVED RESULT
Window would immediately disappear with no animation, and throughout the setup
no warnings are issued.
EXPECTED RESULT
I offer several suggestions, the ranking of which is based on personal
preference.
1. (Most robust) Provide configuration "Minimize Target" for both Squash and
Magic Lamp animations, providing options "fixed" "task manager" and "mouse". If
possible, trigger a warning when the user removes ALL task managers from the
screen to alert them about the animation issue. If not, configure a fallback
chain in the options.
2. (Simplest) Add fallback to "Squash": If no task manager if present, simply
use the bottom-center (or the magic corner, or the mouse, whichever makes more
sense). This would align it with the Magic Lamp animation.
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Tested on:
Operating System: Arch Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 6.5.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.22.0
Qt Version: 6.10.2
Kernel Version: 6.18.9-arch1-2 (64-bit)
