Bug ID: 516340
Summary: Usability bug in Overview as a keyboard-driven window
switcher in multi monitor setup
Classification: Plasma
Product: kwin
Version First 6.5.5
Reported In:
Platform: NixOS
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: minor
Priority: NOR
Component: effects-overview
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
SUMMARY
When using Overview as a keyboard-driven window switcher with two or more
monitors, it sometimes launches new instances of applications instead of
switching to an already open matching window.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
First, make sure that Overviews setting has the checkbox "Search results
include filtered windows" set (default).
1. Open Firefox on screen 1
2. Open Konsole on screen 2
3. Focus the Konsole on screen 2
4. Open Overview (Meta + W)
5. Type “firefox”
6. Press Enter and a new Firefox window opens up
OBSERVED RESULT
A new Firefox instance is started by krunner(?) instead of switching to the
existing Firefox window on the other monitor.
EXPECTED RESULT
In the case, the window is not found on the focused monitor but found on the
other monitor, I'd expect that KDE switches to the window on the other monitor.
A good solution might be to shift the selection and focus to the matching
window on the other monitor in case there is no match on the focused monitor.
If it does so, it would make a really efficient window switcher in addition to
Alt+Tab cycling.
