When using `kcmshell6 qtquicksettings` to set software rendering for plasma,
there's no VRAM usage at all for that process, and I don't notice and
performance loss by that. The only downside I noticed is that window previews
on the task icons no longer works, and rendering of graphs (e.g. throughput of
copy jobs) no longer works - the latter also affects the system monitor. But
it's a small price to pay for much better overall system behavior.

I wonder why background image, especially slide shows, are allocated from VRAM
at all. It's not like the shell has to render fancy effects with them at all.
For window previews, this may matter, tho.

Back when I still used X11, I could set XRender for plasma, and this allowed
window previews and graph rendering without the huge VRAM overhead, but that is
not an option with wayland.
