If it's not possible to attach a debugger at all, check the process status in htop. IIRC when this sort of thing happened on my system a long time ago, the process was in "uninterruptable sleep" (D) state. Maybe KWin gets blocked when trying to open the drm node for the newly loaded driver or something like that...
