When editing things like live musical performances, lots of source clips are long and therefore still take a lot of space, so unloading the sources that aren't needed anymore isn't enough to keep memory consumption reasonably low. What could be done is assessing the available memory and loading the source clips in chunks, so that you never run into being unable to render a project because one of your sources is 70 minutes long.
