SUMMARY
When logging in - I'm shown a log in screen with the only options of switch
user or sleep, the only option that works is switch user. On this screen, my
log in password does not work, so i cannot log in. To log in, I have to switch
user, after doing this I'm taken to my usual (chosen) SDDM log in screen. When
I log in from here, I'm taken to the last screen I logged out on, but its
frozen. After several minutes it goes to sleep (i presume if i tried logging in
from here it would only take me to the unknown switch user screen), I have to
shut down the laptop and turn it on again to be shown my normal log in screen,
after which I can log in okay, and everything works as normal. I can also
restart the laptop from my usual SDDM log in screen, once I am there. This also
works and gives me my usual SDDM log in screen, and logging in works with no
issue. This happens every time my laptop automatically logs me out (sleep and
so on) or if I chose to log out. Note: If i select sleep from the options at my
usual SDDM, it works fine and upon waking it just takes me back to the SDDM. I
do not have LightDM installed, it "does not exist" when I have tried
uninstalling it - I know this can cause similar issues with (fedora) kde.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Laptop goes to sleep
2. Try to log in but just shown unknown switch user/sleep screen. Try password
from this screen - doesn't work, told its the wrong password
3. select switch user, which shows my usual SDDM log in screen. Use password to
log in, I am logged in to
4. the screen I logged out on, but it is frozen
5. the screen goes to sleep
6. I have to restart or turn off/on again the laptop (this is the only thing
that is available on the frozen screen, CRTL ALT DELETE does not work)
6. Shown usual SDDM screen, can log in okay no issues
(What I normally do to "fix" this is is once I'm on the unknown switch
user/sleep screen - i select switch user, I restart my laptop and log in as
normal)
OBSERVED RESULT
(after going through the process of logging in after being initially shown the
switch user/sleep screen) log in, shown frozen screen I logged out on, shut
down laptop, turn on laptop, get shown my usual SDDM and then log in as normal.
EXPECTED RESULT
Log in as normal (password is correct and received as such), shown the screen I
logged out on, nothing is frozen and I can use my laptop as normal
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Windows: 11 (not on this laptop because I accidentally erased it from the disk,
even though it was windows laptop - LG Gram 1790T)
macOS: N/A
(available in the Info Center app, or by running kinfo in a terminal window)
Linux/KDE Plasma: Fedora KDE 43 (is what I am being asked?)
KDE Plasma Version: 6.6.2
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.23.0
Qt Version: 6.10.2
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Although I have a (rudimentary) fix, I am concerned it could one day brick my
entire laptop. At the moment, the process of switching user, restarting and
then logging in is very tedious and inconvenient. It is definitely due to
something not working or being broken, but I am glad that I have some way of
being able to log in and use the laptop at all.
Hopefully it doesn't disappear :)
