Bug ID: 517648
Summary: Improve Online Accounts reliability and integrate
cloud calendars into Plasma calendar widget
Classification: Plasma
Product: plasmashell
Version First master
Reported In:
Platform: Fedora RPMs
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: Calendar widget
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: 1.0
Plasma currently exposes Online Accounts through System Settings, and Google is
listed
as a supported provider. However, in practice the feature is difficult to use
and the
integration with the desktop environment appears incomplete.
Issues observed:
1. Google account authentication loop
When attempting to add a Google account through System Settings → Online
Accounts,
the authentication process repeatedly loops and never successfully completes.
The browser login finishes successfully, but Plasma returns to the
authentication
prompt again.
2. Limited usefulness of Online Accounts
Even when Online Accounts are configured, the Plasma calendar widget in the
system
tray does not display events from those accounts.
The current calendar popup effectively functions as a date viewer only, which
means
users must open a separate application (mail or calendar client) to check
events.
Feature request:
Provide deeper integration between Online Accounts and the Plasma desktop,
specifically by allowing the system tray calendar/time widget to display events
from configured online accounts.
Suggested improvements:
- Display events from Google Calendar when a Google account is configured
- Support additional providers such as Microsoft / Outlook / OneDrive calendars
- Consider integration with other cloud providers where APIs permit (e.g.
Dropbox)
- Provide a unified event view directly in the calendar widget
- Allow enabling or disabling individual account calendars in the widget
Use case:
The Plasma calendar popup is intended to provide quick access to date and time
information. Showing events from connected online calendars would make it much
more useful as a lightweight scheduling overview without needing to open a
separate application.
Environment:
KDE Plasma (latest stable release)
