digiKam can only display files that are also in the database. And this is
already possible; you can simply add files like PDF, TXT, or XLS as MIME types
in the digiKam settings under View, for example, as the image MIME type.

You might even have metadata for some files via ExifTool, and for some, even a
thumbnail, e.g., for PDFs.
For others, only a generic icon.

The only drawback I see is that digiKam will repeatedly attempt to generate a
thumbnail internally for file types where a thumbnail cannot be created.
