Bug ID: 518082
Summary: Weird Wine/Proton+XWayland fullscreen window behavior
since Plasma 6.5 (windows minimizing upon alt+tab or
taskbar showing)
Classification: Plasma
Product: kwin
Version First 6.5.0
Reported In:
Platform: Fedora RPMs
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: major
Priority: NOR
Component: xwayland
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
SUMMARY
Upon updating to Plasma 6.5 (or later also including 6.6) from 6.4.5, I've
noticed a lot of Windows games running through Proton (more specifically the
version 10.0-4) have a strange issue where if they're fullscreened and I
alt+tab out of them or press the meta (Windows) key to show the taskbar and the
start menu, the game inexplicably minimizes itself with a small chance of it
showing a black screen for some games(this in particular needs more testing).
This usually affects older games, so I'll list some games I've encountered the
issue in:
Devil May Cry HD Collection
Plants vs Zombies Game of the Year
NEEDY STREAMER OVERLOAD
The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition
Holocure
Warcraft II: Battle.net Edition
Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun (Windows version)
Suguri
Acceleration of Suguri: X-Edition HD
Touhou 6: Embodiment of the Scarlet Devil
and many more
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Run an older Windows game (such as the ones listed above) using Proton
10.0-4
2. Try alt+tabbing to switch windows or press the meta key to show the start
menu
OBSERVED RESULT
The game minimizes and you may have trouble switching back into it, with a
small chance of it showing a black screen afterwards(needs more testing).
EXPECTED RESULT
The game's fullscreen window stays behind the window switched to until switched
back to, integrating properly into the desktop (as is the case with other
Windows games and Linux-native games).
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
(available in the Info Center app, or by running `kinfo` in a terminal window)
Linux/KDE Plasma: 6.19.8-200.fc43.x86_64
KDE Plasma Version: 6.6.0
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.24.0
Qt Version: 6.10.2
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Using Proton 10.0-4 to launch Windows games. Other versions of Proton, such as
GE-Proton are also affected by this issue even before Plasma 6.5, but I'm not
quite sure as to why. Not all Windows games are affected by this issue,
however.
Linux-native games outside of Minecraft: Java Edition are all unaffected by
this issue, but this is likely caused by something else needing it's own bug
report.
