This a mock up of how the View > Sort By menu could look.
I write to request what I think will be a very helpful addition to Dolphin's
"View > Sort By" options, so that in a Folders First listing, folders can be
sorted alphabetically while files are sorted in another way.
As sorting works now, there is a great option to have Folders listed before
Files (it is located near the bottom of the menu, and has a tick box). But when
folders-first sort is active, both folders and files have the SAME sort order.
Reason for request: For a user the list of folders serves a different function
than the list of files, so providing an option sort them differently makes
sense. The folder list is essentially an index for drilling down, in the
drive's structure, for which an alphabetical sort works best most of the time
(at least in my case). Meanwhile, for files a sort by date or size is a common
usage (for most users, I believe).
PROPOSALS:
1) Add two sub-choices below the existing Folders First tick box. These would
be "By Name", or "Same as Files".
2) It seems to make sense (optionally for the developers) to put the Folders
First items at the top of the menu. This is a short section, and is a major
choice for the user. Everything else below that in the menu would be for files
sorting. (See attached mock up image.)
3) Note: A related sort setting is presented in a different Dolphin menu
series. That is for a Natural sort order, found in Preferences > General >
Behavior > Sorting Mode. If my proposal is adopted, a user's choice of "Folders
First" "by Name" should honor that setting.
4) Note: I make this proposal based on experience. I used the Directory Opus
file manager for many years, in Windows before moving to Linux. It provides
this option, and it makes A WORLD of difference in a file manager's utility. I
have not found any Linux file managers that have this feature, and lacking this
feature I have found use to be clumsy in comparison (including Dolphin). This
would put Dolphin ahead of other Linux file managers.
FURTHER EXPLANATIONS:
Use Case: For all reliance on Dolphin.
Who Benefits: I expect that many Dolphin users will choose to sort folders and
files differently, at least some of the time if not all the time.
Why Can't Be Done Another Way: The "View > Sort By" is the logical place to put
this feature, and it is easily accessed on-the-fly for making a needed sorting
change.
