Here' another alternative that was not available in 2013: run a different distro on the RPI, like openSUSE or CentOS. Here's a compelling reason to do so for some RPI devices, like the Raspberry Pi 3 (if the incompatibilities were not enough): performance. The RPI3 uses an ARM-32 armhf image and its under-performing on the ARMv8/Cortex-A53 processor it has.
