          Priority: NOR
         Component: Tool/Text

  Target Milestone: ---

DESCRIPTION
With the new text tool that was introduced in 5.3, some fonts are now broken. A
mixture of fonts on my system, some system fonts, and some fonts installed by
myself are broken in various ways.

An example I have is the Jost font ( https://fonts.google.com/specimen/Jost ,
https://github.com/indestructible-type/Jost ), installed from Google Fonts via
FontBase ( https://fontba.se/ ). The font, which worked properly with the
previous text tool, now is permanently stuck in italic with none of the
variable axes working.

See extended discussion here:
https://krita-artists.org/t/text-tool-thread/57973/401?u=crystalyne

STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Install font via FontBase
2. Use font in Krita
3. Observe that font is broken.

OBSERVED RESULT
For example above, observe the font is permanently stuck in italic and variable
axes do not work.

EXPECTED RESULT
Text is in expected format (italic / normal) and variable axes work properly.

SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System (available in the Info Center app, or by running `kinfo` in a
terminal window): Fedora Silverblue 44
