Your observation is correct. Incidentally, I just looked at the code yesterday
because I also wanted to hide equities I do no longer have. Turns out that the
filter isn't applied to this list. Moreover, the option "Do not show zero
balance equities" has a bad side effect: It will hide all of your investment
accounts (because, technically, they are of type equity account and they always
have zero balance). (I haven't confirmed this, but the investment accounts I
had open as tabs in the ledger view were all gone after I had enabled this
option.)

Looking further I found a much better way to hide no longer needed equities. I
closed those equity accounts. You need to enable the option "Show equity
accounts" to make the equity accounts visible in the accounts list. And then
you can close the equity accounts you don't need anymore.
