Krita doesn't let you assign stylus buttons to mouse buttons, so this is
presumably something you are configuring in your tablet driver or similar. What
tablet is this and how are you assigning the button? Ideally provide
screenshots of whatever thing you are configuring it in.

When you open Settings → Configure Krita → Tablet settings and then click on
"Open Tablet Tester" at the bottom, what happens when you middle-click into the
grid area on the left? If the tablet actually transmits a middle-click, you
should be seeing a line with "B=4" in the log on the right.

Also, are you actually talking about the pan *tool* or just about panning the
canvas with middle-click? Since the pan tool would drag the canvas with a
left-click instead.
