Bug ID: 521546
Summary: Kate creates multiple buffers for a single open file,
causing data corruption/loss
Classification: Applications
Product: kate
Version First 25.12.1
Reported In:
Platform: Other
OS: FreeBSD
Status: REPORTED
Severity: critical
Priority: NOR

Target Milestone: ---
DESCRIPTION
Kate creates multiple buffers for a single open file, causing data
corruption/loss
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Let the session grow very large (>30 files) and work with it over months
without restarting Kate.
2. Heavily use split windows intensely (at least 3x3 matrix), with multiple
split windows pointing into the same file. Ignore the tab bar above the split
views for changing to another file for that split window, use solely the left
bar which shows all open files. (When the bug finally appears, there are
usually so many files open that the left bar already has a scroll bar.)
3. Just wait until a buffer splits into multiple identical buffers, as visible
in the screenshot.
OBSERVED RESULT
See here (including screenshot):
https://discuss.kde.org/t/dangerous-data-loss-bug-kate-does-not-save-file-and-gives-no-message-that-the-file-has-not-been-written-to-disk/45925/6
EXPECTED RESULT
No buffer splitting, no quiet not-saving the files, no data loss
