Bug ID: 521720
Summary: KWin Wayland stutters on NVIDIA (6.7
Classification: Plasma
Product: kwin
Version First 6.7.0
Reported In:
Platform: CachyOS
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: compositing
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
DESCRIPTION
On KDE Plasma 6.7.0 Wayland, KWin frame pacing/FPS does not feel stable on my
system. Animations feel laggy or uneven, especially when moving between virtual
desktops/workspaces and when opening or navigating the Overview effect.
The system is using a 165 Hz external display at 2560x1440 with 125% scaling.
The issue is noticeable during normal desktop usage and is not limited to
gaming or heavy GPU load.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
Log in to a KDE Plasma Wayland session.
Use a high refresh rate display, in my case 2560x1440 at 165 Hz with 125%
scaling.
Open the Overview effect and move around, or switch/move between workspaces
repeatedly.
OBSERVED RESULT
KWin animations and desktop movement do not feel smooth. FPS/frame pacing
appears unstable, and the Overview/workspace animations feel laggy or stuttery.
EXPECTED RESULT
KWin should keep smooth and stable frame pacing on a 165 Hz display. Overview
and workspace switching animations should feel smooth and consistent.
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: CachyOS Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.0
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.27.0
Qt Version: 6.11.1
Kernel Version: 7.0.12-1-cachyos (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Hardware:
Processors: 28 × Intel Core i7-14700F
Memory: 16 GiB RAM / 15.4 GiB usable
Graphics Processor: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Ti
Display: 2560x1440 external display at 165 Hz, 125% scaling
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The lag/stutter is most visible in KWin animations such as Overview and
workspace switching. I am not sure whether this is related to NVIDIA Wayland
frame pacing, fractional scaling, high refresh rate handling, or KWin itself.
