Bug ID: 521862
Summary: Full screen content gets dimmed to almost black on
Samsung Odyssey G5
Classification: Plasma
Product: kwin
Version First 6.7.0
Reported In:
Platform: Arch Linux
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: general
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
DESCRIPTION
After updating to plasma 6.7, whenever I end up running any kind of content at
full screen such as a game, youtube video or even firefox itself with F11, the
screen's brightness is greatly reduced and color contrast gets all over the
place, only returning to normal when I tab out of the content or make the
plasma workspace appear over the full screen window. I already tried to mess
with HDR and VRR settings on my monitor and in plasma settings to no avail and
even tried to test on a blank user account to no avail.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Boot into the system with a Samsung Odyssey G5 connected at default settings
(1440p, 144Hz, VRR disabled, HDR disabled, automatic color depth, color
precision - prefer efficiency)
2. Open any full screen/borderless content, be it game, video, etc.
3. Tab out of the content or return back to windowed mode
4 (additional). Try the same with HDR enabled (even though the G5's HDR is
really bad and colors look completely washed out when running on plasma)
OBSERVED RESULT
Any content that runs in full screen causes the screen to completely dim with
color contrast being the only thing that reasonable makes the screen content
still viewable.
EXPECTED RESULT
Entering in and out of full screen mode should not cause any display color
changes except when adapting to HDR content when available and enabled.
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: Arch Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.0
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.27.0
Qt Version: 6.11.1
Kernel Version: 7.1.1-2-cachyos (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 16 × AMD Ryzen 7 5700X 8-Core Processor
Memory: 32 GiB of RAM (31.2 GiB usable)
Graphics Processor: AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The results change depending on the screen content. More white-predominant
content has most colors darkened aside from the brightness dim, darker content
nearly cuts the screen brightness while only color content is still visible,
though very dark.
Both Kwin and Powerdevil don't show any error log about this behavior at all
