            Bug ID: 521912
Summary: Add a software dimming slider to Night Light that
darkens the final image independently of the color
                    temperature.
    Classification: Plasma
           Product: kwin
      Version First unspecified
       Reported In:
          Platform: Other
                OS: Linux
            Status: REPORTED
          Severity: normal
          Priority: NOR
         Component: night color
          Assignee: [email protected]
          Reporter: [email protected]
  Target Milestone: ---

Currently, Night Light only adjusts the display's color temperature to reduce
blue light. However, it does not provide a way to further reduce the perceived
brightness of the screen without lowering the display's hardware brightness.

I would like Night Light to include an additional software dimming control that
darkens the final rendered image independently of the selected color
temperature.

This would allow users to:

Keep their preferred Night Light color temperature.
Further reduce screen luminance for comfortable viewing in dark environments.
Use additional dimming on displays that cannot reduce hardware brightness
sufficiently (especially external monitors).
Fine-tune nighttime viewing without affecting the monitor's brightness setting.

The dimming should be independent of the color temperature, allowing users to
adjust warmth and brightness separately.

Example

For example, a user could set:

Color temperature: 3400 K
Software dimming: 30%

This would produce the same warm color temperature while making the entire
image 30% darker.

Rationale

Night Light and hardware brightness solve different problems. Night Light
changes the color of the light emitted, while hardware brightness changes the
monitor's backlight or luminance. An additional software dimming option would
provide finer control over nighttime viewing, particularly for displays where
hardware brightness cannot be reduced further.
