I tried to disable foreign key checks in mysql and couldn't get digikam to get
past it.

In the end I replaced mysql with mariadb, imported my digikam database and now
it's working fine. My mysql installation was ONLY for digikam so it was
fairly straightforward for me. Others might not be so lucky.
