Bug ID: 522302
Summary: Feature Request] Elegant loading animations for panels
and desktop icons on startup to prevent visual stutter
Classification: Plasma
Product: plasmashell
Version First 6.6.5
Reported In:
Platform: CachyOS
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: wishlist
Priority: NOR
Component: "Manage Desktop and Panels" window
Assignee: [email protected]

Target Milestone: 1.0
There is a visual shortcoming regarding how panels and desktop icons appear on
the screen during session startup in KDE Plasma. Because of heavy widgets and
extensions, the panels load with a very jarring visual stutter, popping up in
pieces rather than appearing smoothly. Even on a clean setup without any
extensions, the default loading behavior lacks a premium feel and smooth
animations. The same issue applies to desktop icons; they just pop up abruptly
and clunkily upon login.
To improve this, I think adding polished and synchronized startup effects as a
new feature would make a huge difference:
For Panels: Panels could finish loading completely hidden in the background (so
the user doesn't see the stuttering load process), and then elegantly slide
into view from their respective screen edges with a smooth animation.
For Desktop Icons: Instead of popping up all at once, icons could load
sequentially one by one, or fade in smoothly with a nice opacity transition.
Initially, I was planning to write a personal workaround script to hide the
panels on logout and reveal them with a delay after login to avoid seeing this
clunky process. However, having a native, smooth startup animation for both
panels and desktop icons would be a much more elegant and professional feature
for the entire KDE community.
