Okay, found a solution, but it's not user-friendly. To enable button input, you have to go to remote input screen settings and enable "Show home button" from there, which is off by default, but showing back button is enabled by default. The fix in this case should be to have option "Show home button" enabled by default to avoid confusion of missing home button for users with default settings.
