Bug ID: 522461
Summary: KWin 6.7 switching desktops is laggy on external
screen which connected to nvidia GPU
Classification: Plasma
Product: kwin
Version First 6.7.0
Reported In:
Platform: openSUSE
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: wayland-generic

Target Milestone: ---
DESCRIPTION
Starting with KWin 6.7.0 and now with 6.7.1, switching desktops animation
became noticeably laggy compared to KWin 6.6.
My system is a laptop with Intel GPU and NVidia GPU, built-in screen connected
to Intel and external screen connected to NVidia.
Switching between NVidia drivers versions (580.* — 595.*) doesn't change
anything.
Lag was not present in KWin 6.6, if I downgrade to kwin 6.6.5 desktop switching
works fine, but it breaks Plasma 6.7 in other cases.
Lag is not present when I switch to NVidia only in UEFI, but I prefer using
Intel when possible, especially when external screen is not plugged, lower
battery usage.
Also, it seems, CPU usage is higher when content updated on external screen,
but I'm unsure about this one.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Two GPU laptop (Intel+NVidia), built-in connected to Intel, external to
NVidia.
2. Switch between desktops.
OBSERVED RESULT
Desktop switch animation is laggy on external screen, internal screen completes
animation way before external.
EXPECTED RESULT
Similar to KWin 6.6: animation on external screen as fast as internal.
