DESCRIPTION
I'm running Fedora 44 with KDE spin on x86_64, full patched.
# lsb_release -a
Distributor ID: Fedora
Description: Fedora Linux 44 (KDE Plasma Desktop Edition)
Release: 44
# plasmashell --version
plasmashell 6.7.2
The KDE folks enabled a virtual keyboard sometime in June 2026. Since then my
exclamation point key ('!') and the double quote key ('"') stopped working as
expected. Now when I try to type them I get a pop-up that asks me to select a
flavor of the key. The problem is, for '!', there is no right-side-up
exclamation point symbol to select. There is a symbol for '"''. It happens on
the login screen, in Firefox, and other programs.
I disabled the KDE Virtual Keyboard, but it keeps turning back on. I disabled
through Settings -> Keyboard -> Virtual Keyboard -> None. But as I said, it
keeps getting reverted to Plasma Keyboard.
Next I tried to remove plasma-keyboard package, but that failed:
# dnf remove plasma-keyboard
Failed to resolve the transaction:
Problem: installed package plasma-workspace-6.7.2-2.fc44.x86_64 requires
plasma-keyboard(x86-64),
but none of the providers can be installed
- installed package plasma-desktop-6.7.2-1.fc44.x86_64 requires
plasma-workspace, but none of
the providers can be installed
- conflicting requests
- problem with installed package
The virtual keyboard also interferes with the login screen, so it is leaking
password characters. My password happens to have both '!' and '"' to screw
with web developers who do not escape properly.
Others seem to be having this problem, too:
Some folks don't want to be hassled with a virtual keyboard (like me and the
folks on Reddit). I am more than happy with 7-bit ASCII for passwords.
Please fix this.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
Use Fedora 44 with KDE 6.7
OBSERVED RESULT
Some of my keystrokes are being swallowed, and a character picker is displayed
intead of the symbol for the character.
EXPECTED RESULT
I am allowed to type the characters I want, without being hassled by a virtual
keyboard.
