Bug ID: 522723
Summary: KWin Wayland crashes repeatedly when connecting
dual-screen USB-C portable monitor after upgrading KDE
neon
Classification: Plasma
Product: kwin
Version First 6.7.0
Reported In:
Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: wayland-generic
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
### Environment
* Distribution: KDE neon User Edition 24.04
* Session: Plasma Wayland
* Kernel: 6.17.0-35-generic
* Laptop: ASUS Vivobook M5606KA (AMD Ryzen AI platform)
* External display: INGNOK dual-screen USB-C portable monitor (single USB-C
cable provides both power and display)
### Description
Prior to upgrading to KDE neon 7 / the current Plasma release, this monitor
worked correctly using a single USB-C cable. After the upgrade, connecting the
monitor consistently causes the Wayland session to crash.
The monitor is connected using one USB-C cable. Before the upgrade, both
displays on the portable monitor were detected and functioned normally. After
the upgrade, connecting the same monitor results in a USB-C connection error,
followed by repeated KWin Wayland crashes.
This issue is reproducible every time.
### Steps to Reproduce
1. Boot into a Plasma Wayland session.
2. Connect the INGNOK dual-screen USB-C portable monitor using a single USB-C
cable.
3. Wait for the display detection process.
### Actual Result
* A USB-C connection error is reported.
* KWin Wayland begins crashing repeatedly.
* The desktop session becomes unstable and multiple DrKonqi crash reports are
generated.
### Expected Result
The external monitor should be detected and configured without crashing the
Wayland compositor.
### Relevant log messages
```
ucsi_acpi USBC000:00: ucsi_handle_connector_change: GET_CONNECTOR_STATUS failed
(-110)
```
```
kwin_wayland: atomic commit failed: Permission denied
```
Following these messages, `kwin_wayland` repeatedly crashes and DrKonqi
generates numerous crash reports.
### Additional Information
This appears to be a regression. The same hardware, cable, and monitor
configuration functioned correctly before upgrading to the current KDE neon /
Plasma release.
