In some continued testing over the last 24 hours I've found I can trigger the
failure in a less tedious way.

1. Have only the variable refresh rate display connected.
2. Startup the computer.
3. Login to a user account.
4. Log back out of the user account, returning to the plasmalogin greeter.
5. Click the sleep button.
6. Wait a 5-10 seconds, and wake the machine.
7. Observe (usually, though seemingly not 100% of the time) the system will
wake the display, sometimes display the greeter, other times not, and lock-up
becoming unresponsive to mouse/keyboard inputs.

Interestingly, I cannot produce any of the behavior if the login/log-out steps
are skipped. Stated explicitly, the following process does not result in a
crash regardless of repeating steps 3 and 4 bellow:
1. Have only the variable refresh rate display connected.
2. Startup the computer.
3. Click the sleep button.
4. Wait a 5-10 seconds, and wake the machine.
5. System wakes as expected and accepts user inputs.
