DESCRIPTION
After routine KDE update within 6.7.3, I received magenta kernel panic screen:
Kernel Panic!
Please reboot your computer
VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (0,0)
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. After update, attempt to boot and load KDE Linux
2. Kernel Panic screen appears.
3. Stuck.
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
I am submitting this report on Mac OS - both linux boxes with this symptom are
bricked at present :-(
KDE Neon - Plasma 6.7.3
Don't know other details - not on the machines to generate details.
iMac 2011
3.4 Ghz Quad Core Intel i7
AMD Radeon HD 6970M 1GB video
Once this happened, I could NOT boot the machine with internal drive. ONLY
Kernel Panic! screen.
I was able to boot with an external flash prepared on 2nd machine running safe
graphics KDE.
2nd machine:
iMac 2012
3.4 Ghz Quad Core Intel i7
Nvida GEForce GTX 675MX 1 GB
I think through 6.7.2 I could use this 2nd similar machine normally with normal
graphics.
Beginning 6.7.3 I could not load / get to login screen with normal graphics.
I created a safe graphics external KDE with 6.7.3
Functional but very slow without normal graphics card.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Using the safe graphics version of 6.7.3 on an external USB flash drive, I was
able to boot the 2011 iMac machine in safe graphics mode. Functional but slow.
MISTAKE ON MY PART:
I proceeded to update the external USB flash from the 2011 iMac and again got
only the Linux Panic! screen.
My guess: the initram file somehow was corrupted or missing in the updated KDE
release and my hardware is unable to handle the update.
I would love to be able to continue to use both of these older Intel i7 Quad
Core machines with KDE Neon if possible.
Am switching to a newer hp laptop this handles KDE neon wonderfully.
