Bug ID: 523759
Summary: Create directory symbolic links / junctions from
within digiKam (restricted to existing managed
collections)
Classification: Applications
Product: digikam
Version First 9.2.0
Reported In:
Platform: Other
OS: Other
Status: REPORTED
Severity: wishlist
Priority: NOR
Component: Albums-Engine
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
SUMMARY
Add a “Create Linked Album / Directory Link” option when creating a new
album/folder inside digiKam. The link would be a directory junction (or
symbolic link) that points to another already-registered collection or album.
The destination must be limited to folders that are already part of digiKam’s
managed collections.
USE CASE
When sorting large unstructured dumps (e.g. a “_ToProcess” working folder),
users need quick access to a small set of target destinations (Football,
Baseball, specific people, specific year/event folders, etc.) without
navigating a deep, expanding/contracting tree. Accidental expansion, clicks, or
drops become common and switch context/focus.
A shallow working folder containing only the relevant linked destinations
greatly reduces navigation effort and risk of file drop or hover opening a
directory etc etc while still letting digiKam (and the OS) treat the targets as
normal folders. Deleting the link itself must never touch the real destination.
PROPOSED BEHAVIOR
In the Albums view, right-click → include an option inside the existing New
Album dialog: type = Normal / Linked.
User picks a display name and chooses the target from a filtered tree that only
shows currently registered collections and their albums.
The new link appears as a normal album in the digiKam tree. Deleting the linked
album only removes the link; the target collection remains untouched.
Optionally show a small icon or tooltip indicating it is a link.
Respect existing digiKam collection scan rules so that following the link does
not create duplicate database entries.
