Bug ID: 524083
Summary: Modal window management bugs in Wayland
Classification: Plasma
Product: kwin
Version First 6.6.5
Reported In:
Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: wayland-generic
Assignee: [email protected]
Reporter: [email protected]
Target Milestone: ---
DESCRIPTION
Modal windows behave differently under Wayland compared to X11 and cause very
unexpected behavior.
I use Firefox with the Bitwarden add-on. When I open the add-on in a new window
it behaves different to X11 in these ways:
- It has no taskbar entry
- It is always on top of the Firefox main window
- I cannot select it via Alt+Tab
- If I move it to the 2nd virtual desktop, open another application on the 1st
desktop, then click the taskbar entry of Firefox on the 1st desktop the 2nd
desktop is opened to focus the Bitwarden window. This also happens if I open
another main Firefox window on the 2nd desktop and open Bitwarden from that.
Every Firefox taskbar entry will always focus the Bitwarden window no matter
what, making the taskbar entry useless.
I use keyboard navigation and the Bitwarden add-on a lot to copy certain
passwords and paste them in certain places outside of the web. I could use the
Bitwarden standalone application instead, but that is a huge window, clunky,
and I need to use Bitwarden inside of my browser anyway. So it just doubles up
uselessly.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Run a Wayland session
2. Open Firefox
3. Open the Bitwarden extension in a new window
4. Move the Bitwarden window to the 2nd desktop
5. Open something else on the 1st desktop
6. Klick the Firefox taskbar entry on the 1st desktop
OBSERVED RESULT
- The Bitwarden window is always in front of the Firefox window and you can't
keyboard navigate to it.
- You are moved to the 2nd desktop when clicking the Firefox taskbar entry on
the 1st desktop.
EXPECTED RESULT
- You can keyboard navigate to the Bitwarden window.
- You can have the Btwarden window behind the Firefox window.
- You stay on the 1st desktop when clicking the Firefox taskbar entry on the
1st desktop and Firefox is brought up.

Graphics Processor 2: AMD Ryzen 7 7700 8-Core Processor
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
TuxedoOS is only on KDE 6.6.5, not 6.7.x. But since these bugs are here since
at least 6.5.x I thought I better report them before X11 is dropped. These bugs
are more or less the only reason why I still use X11 (also
SimpleScreenRecorder, but I guess Spectacle would be a replacement for that,
though I haven't tested it).
If this IMO very broken behavior (or parts of it) is actually intended, is
there an option to force the Bitwarden window to be non-modal? I remember that
you could do all sorts of window rules back in the days, but I can't find this
specific option. At least the desktop jumping I just cannot imagine to be
intentional.
