Bug ID: 524731
Summary: [AMD Navi 48] KWin 6.7.4 causes "Unsupported screen
format RA24" and atomic modeset failures; 6.7.3 works
Classification: Plasma
Product: kwin
Version First unspecified
Reported In:
Platform: Other
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: normal
Priority: NOR
Component: platform-drm

Target Milestone: ---
SUMMARY
After updating from KWin 6.7.3 to 6.7.4, the amdgpu driver logs
"Unsupported screen format RA24 little-endian (0x34324152)" continuously,
and one of my displays (a 4K TV on HDMI) stops receiving a signal while
another display flickers. Downgrading to 6.7.3 completely resolves it.
STEPS TO REPRODUCE
1. Plasma Wayland on AMD Navi 48 with three outputs (2x DisplayPort, 1x HDMI 4K
TV)
2. Boot with KWin 6.7.4
3. journalctl -b | grep -cE "RA24|Atomic modeset commit failed"
OBSERVED RESULT
- Hundreds of RA24 errors per boot
- HDMI output reports enabled/connected in kscreen-doctor at 3840x2160@60,
but the TV receives no signal
- Content intended for the HDMI output appears intermittently on a
DisplayPort monitor (flickering)
EXPECTED RESULT
All three outputs work as they did on 6.7.3.
SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
Operating System: Bazzite (Fedora Atomic 44)
KDE Plasma Version: 6.x (Wayland)
Kernel: 7.2.0-ogc4.1.fc44.x86_64 (broken) / 7.1.5-ogc5.1.fc44.x86_64 (working)
GPU: AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT (Navi 48, 1002:7550)
Mesa/amdgpu: Display Core v3.2.384, DCN 4.0.1
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
- KWin 6.7.4 => broken; KWin 6.7.3 => zero RA24 errors, all outputs fine
- The kernel is NOT the variable: this reproduces on 7.2.0 and, per the
report below, also on 7.1.8 and LTS 6.18.42
- Forcing 8 bpc does not help (per the linked report)
- Also reported on CachyOS, so this appears to be upstream rather than
distro packaging: https://github.com/CachyOS/distribution/issues/547
