Bug ID: 524880
Summary: Transcoding to "Lossy x264 I frame only (VAAPI GPU
Video only)" crashes AMD Radeon RX
470/480/570/570X/580/580X/590
Classification: Applications
Product: kdenlive
Version First 26.08.0
Reported In:
Platform: Arch Linux
OS: Linux
Status: REPORTED
Severity: crash
Priority: NOR
Component: Project Bin & Import

Target Milestone: ---
# DESCRIPTION
There appears to be an upstream kernel bug, where a specific FFmpeg command
Kdenlive runs crashes the GPU.
>From my tests, Linux 7.1.x seems to be affected.
Downgrading to the last LTS version, Linux 6.18, should resolve the issue until
upstream provides a fix.
# STEPS TO REPRODUCE
0. Use Linux 7.1.x and a Radeon 400 series GPU.
1. Open Kdenlive. Select "New project", but cancel the project settings dialog.
2. Drag a variable-frame-rate video into the Project Bin.
3. Confirm the transcoding Kdenlive offers to "Lossy x264 I frame only (VAAPI
GPU Video only)".
4. The system crashed every time on Linux 7.1.8-zen1-3-zen and often on Linux
7.1.10-arch1-1.
# OBSERVED RESULT
GPU hangs, as described in:
https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/drm/amd/-/work_items/5707
# EXPECTED RESULT
The imported video should transcode fine.
# SOFTWARE/OS VERSIONS
The Radeon 400 series appears to be affected.
Operating System: Arch Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 6.7.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.29.0
Qt Version: 6.11.2
Kernel Versions: Linux 7.1.8-zen1-3-zen #1 ZEN SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC, Linux
7.1.10-arch1-1 #1 SMP PREEMPT_DYNAMIC (64-bit)
Mesa Versions: 26.1.8, 26.2.1
Graphics Platform: Wayland
# ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
This is not directly an issue with Kdenlive. However, users may notice their
system crashing while using it, so it should be registered as an upstream bug.
