Feature wish: The adjustable column header width could be made more versatile
with the following behaviour:
- On double click to column header
Set to the minimal width that is necessary to display without truncation the
longest entry in the list below it, automatically widening or narrowing as
necessary. Do so only once on this double click, as opposed to permanent
auto-width (that would better be set via a checkbox for each column in the
Settings or via a pop-up context menu on that column). Do this only if that
width is not already set.
- With a double click + modifier key: Set to a fixed minimal width (to be set
in Settings) in the same situation. Also do this only if that width is not
already set.
- If that width is already set: Double click resets column to width that it had
before the above on-double-click sizing.
It would be desirable to have this behaviour for all columns, to keep
consistent behaviour, even where it does not appear to make sense. Also: some
will want to use it with link destinations, permissions, long dates, tags
lists, comments, ...
Use case example: This would allow quick glances at full long file names in
settings where in general the display of more columns is needed. Or vice versa,
to briefly shorten names when the overall work requires display of the complete
file name but a glance at columns farther to the right outside the viewport is
wanted.
This is quicker and more elegant than manual column width dragging, esp. when
long list entries are outside the view port and one may have to do the
re-widening several times.
